Making Dreams Come True
for children with life-threatening illnesses
Over The Moon Recipient
The Dreams Come True “Over The Moon” Award was developed to recognize the men and women in our local hospitals and clinics who are on the front lines of treating and assisting our children, and who go above and “Over the Moon” for our dreamers.
We are proud to announce Heather Oakley, Director of Social Services and Clinical Social Worker for UF Health Proton Therapy Institute, as our recent recipient of the “Over The Moon” Award.
Heather has been a longtime partner of Dreams Come True. She consistently goes above and beyond in working with families. She gets to know each dream child and connects with Dreams Come True so that we can fulfill both needs and dreams. Heather’s welcoming smile, warm demeanor, and drive make her such an asset to the community. She works tirelessly coordinating local resources to ensure each family is supported to the fullest during their journey. Here are some questions we asked Heather:
What do you enjoy about working with Dreams Come True?
I love working with Dreams Come True (DCT)! Ashley Smith is always responsive and goes out of her way to make sure children and young adults are well taken care of. My experience is the DCT staff goes “above and beyond” in any situation, whether it’s providing Special Times, holiday sponsorships or Dreams.
How would you describe the impact of a dream on a child and their family?
Dreams Come True has a major impact on the children and young adults that they serve. They develop connections with these children/young adults and provide them with an opportunity to dream about something special and specific to their interests. Thinking about a dream gives a child or young adult something to look forward to when they’re in the midst of a terrible time. It can also promote hope which we know is so important. Many children and families would be unable to have these experiences if not for the generosity of DCT.
One of your fondest memories associated with a dreamer and their dream trip
My fondest memory of a dreamer is a 14-year-old male who was living with his single mother and multiple siblings in low-income housing. When we met him, he didn’t have his own bed. I called DCT to see if they had any contacts that might help. To my surprise and delight, they not only provided a bed for this young man, but beds for all of his siblings too. After his treatment was complete, he chose to have an electronic shopping trip as his Dream. They sent me pictures of the shopping trip and the smile on his face is something I will always remember!
What does Dreams Come True mean to you?
Dreams Come True means a lot to me as a clinical social worker. We have worked together for ten plus years. Any time a child/family has a need, I know I can reach out to DCT and they will tell me whether they can assist or not. It’s almost always yes, even if we have to be “creative.” Most importantly, DCT provides services that promote joy and create family memories for children and families. I feel fortunate to work with this amazing community partner!
Currently, UF Health Proton Therapy Institute is one of only several proton therapy facilities operating in the nation, and the only proton therapy facility in the Southeast U.S. Patients undergoing proton radiation at UF Health vary from local families to patients that have traveled internationally to receive treatment. Dreams Come True is so thankful for the amazing partnerships with our medical community.
At Dreams Come True, our mission is brought to life through the dedication and passion of our staff, volunteers and the partnerships on the First Coast that we cherish. It is together that we are able to ensure that no child is denied a dream or placed on a waiting list. Thank you to all our donors for their assistance in bringing hope and joy into the lives of local children battling life-threatening illnesses. A special thank you to the following community partners who have gone above and beyond to help us fulfill our mission.
Our Community. Our Children. Our Commitment.

Dream Society of Giving
In 1984, the Northeast Florida community laid the foundation that has led to the fulfillment of more than 3,700 dreams. Today, annual corporate and individual gifts sustain the ever growing work of Dreams Come True as we strive to maintain our commitment to never have a waiting list and never turn down an eligible child. Gifts to Dreams Come True are tailored to meet the goals of each company or individual donor. Regardless of whether your support is through a general donation or for a specific program or event, your gift will be recognized.
Approximately 98% of all dreams granted by Dreams Come True last year fell into this range. Therefore, by becoming a Dream Maker, you can underwrite the cost of an entire dream.
